The St. Mary’s ministry has been in existence for about 40 years. The ministry serves St. Mary’s, which is a combination of St. Boniface and St. Mary’s parishes (after St. Boniface closed a few years ago). St. Catharine parishioners donate non-perishable food items on the second Sunday of each month at all masses (including the Saturday 5:30 pm mass the day before). Then volunteers drive the donated groceries to St. Mary’s in Jersey City. While the St. Mary’s Emergency Food Closet is always needed in the community, it was especially important during the pandemic and even now remains to be a great need to assist families and individuals in the community with food.
Because of the great response from parishioners, two cars are driving each month to take the food to Jersey City. Volunteers are needed to pick up the food at St. Catharine at about 11:45 am and leave for Jersey City at about 12:15 pm. The cars then arrive just in time for the parishioners of St. Mary’s to help unload the cars after their noon mass. You can sign up as you are available to drive. It can be once or twice a year, or a few times based on your willingness to drive and your availability. Upcoming dates are May 15 (moved from Mother’s Day), June 12, July 10, and August 14. So grab your spouse or a friend, take a Sunday drive and do something good!!
